Re-sizing Images

Introduction

There are two ways of re-sizing images. You can:

leave the file in its original size and just render the image in as a smaller size, or

you can make the image smaller by actually altering the images size (and hence the image's file size).

Websites commonly have many pictures. Websites that specialize in pictures (known as galleries) frequently use thumbnail pictures. A thumbnail picture is a small version of the original picture (that is, it has a smaller file size) . When the picture is clicked on, it displays the larger full size image. This is useful because it allows users to only view the images they want to actually see, thus saving on download time and money.

A common mistake many novice web designers make is creating thumbnails by using the full file size of an image but displaying it in thumbnail size. This is not very useful because to display the thumbnail sized image, the entire full size image has to be downloaded anyway.

NOTE

HotDog can automatically create tables of thumbnails for you. See the "Thumbnail Wizard" for more details.
